Sounds like a false alarm, with witnesses' eyes plagued by suggestion.

That's exactly what I've been thinking. There were a few other witnesses who reported seeing a guy with a gun (such as the girl that the news said texted her mom to say she saw him), but maybe they saw the same thing from a less-than-adequate point of view and after hearing reports of a gunman thought they saw him.

There's only two possibilities:
(1) There was a gunman that was in Lockwood and left before the police arrived.
(2) There was no gunman.

Seeing as it was a weekday afternoon where there are people everywhere on campus, I find it unlikely that he could have walked out of the building, either to outside or another building, without attracting significant attention. Thus, (1) seems unlikely.

Mmhmm.

Suggestion is powerful. I just keep thinking of a case I looked into where a man was wrongly executed for arson that killed his three children; in reality the fire was started by a space heater, which was proven several days before he was executed. The neighbors went from saying that he was incredibly distraught and trying to get back in the house to save them but unable because of the heat to saying after the charges were filed that he looked like he was acting and that he didn't try to get back in at all. Then they testified with that... Uhhhh.

i agree. the larger chance of anything is that it was a false alarm. I am just hoping that they did check more than just lockwood because like it has been mentioned, there are connections to many other buildings, and there are many places to hide in UB. and while the text alerts got to students quickly, not all students are signed up for that. The emails, which go to the whole student body, weren't there nearly as quick.

True. If you sign up for the Rave alert system, it also sends you an email - every student should be signed up for it then!

But the general emails did take longer.

From what is in my inbox:
4:40 rave text alert
4:42 rave email alert
4:54 email on employee listserv
4:57 employee email forwarded to undergrad engineer listserv
5:17 email sent to entire student listserv

That is 37 minutes from the text to the email reaching the whole student body - they should make that quicker. I think all @buffalo.edu emails should be automatically on the rave alert system.

Even so, by the time I got the text I already knew something was wrong when I saw 5 Amherst police cars going past Bonner. That was a good 5 minutes before the text came.

could have been carrying a musical instrument or an object that resembled a gun. I mean if my guitar was a bit more slender people could probably mistake the case as a gun case. just another possibility.

I remember seeing on someone's facebook last night that there was supposed to be some zombie battle thing going on. Could've just been a kid with a nerf gun or something, or some sort of toy gun that just looked real. Who knows. Scary stuff, though, regardless of whether or not it was a false alarm.

Nothing thus far, it appears there is no evidence of there ever being someone. Chances are someone didn't want to take a test that night, and got creative.

I have two sons who attend UB; so this certainly got my attention. I worry enough about the possibility of them putting themselves (as we all have - or will most likely will do) out at night, or on the road. On Campus is not one of the spots I would have carried that concern.... :(
