E-mail correspondence with a co-worker on the merits of winning a cup vs. winning a gold medal.

From: Alexander S. Bauer
Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010 1:01 PM
To: Coworker
Subject: RE:

Stanley Cup won out 23-3 in a poll on the sabres boards which are about 80% American, 15% Canadian and 5% Austrian.

From: Coworker

But sabres fans are not a representative sample because they probably consist of buffalo natives, and buffalo natives have nothing else to hold on to except for sports since their city is slowly becoming a dump. I would also retort that asking a typical fan—not someone so fanatical that they waste hours of their life on team forums, the response would flip. You are only accounting for one of the most narrow die-hard fan bases in the country.

"Slowly becoming a dump"?

Your coworker is an out of touch idiot...Buffalo was a dump 30 years ago...tell him to get a new line and pull his thumb out of his butt.

I was gonna say he can go pound sand, but pulling thumb out of his butt works just fine to me

I think Buffalo is a beautiful city with great people and values. Had I not thought this and share this mindset with MM, we would not be making our 3rd trip to the city in a little more than one weeks time.

We're looking forward to seeing even more sights when we make it down! And of course, meeting the French Connection and seeing 2 games :D

the whole rustbelt is a dump. cities like buffalo, detroit, flint, gary, ect.. all dying cities. i dont think theyll be dying forever, but its going to be a while before things get better as a whole. at least detroit and flint is starting to see an upswing. hopefully buffalo will too.

I use the term "dump" in the most loving of ways. It's outsiders that only see the city that way.

You all are forgetting; we're members of this forum because we're die hards to our favorite team.

There are tons of casual hockey fans all over the country who would say gold medal in a heart beat, simply because they don't have a favorite team.

EDIT:

Sorry, in addition, that guy is a prick. ;)

Naw; I'm a native Buffalonean. I was downtown today. It is a fucking dump. For god's sake; tear down some of the downtown blocks, and create something of interest for the general public and out of towner's.

I dunno PSP. There are casual fans of other teams all over the place who are fans of other teams (I Know, blasphemy how they're not Sabres fans!!) who would likely say they'd take the Cup over a gold medal win. Like, take the Leafs and their fan base for example...

 Actually, scratch that idea. I think the Leaf Nation may just be happy with a .500 or above season for a change

It's not like some southern cities are much less dumpier then northern cities.

Yeah, I don't have much of a problem when people call Buffalo a dump because... it kind of is... along with all the cities you mentioned, which all share the same values, really. The Rust Belt, all of Chicago to Buffalo and maybe then some, is a sorry place to some, and rightfully so I suppose, but I still love it. I'll never brag on how beautiful the city is unless I'm talking to someone from Gary or wherever that makes a comment on it, but I'll certainly bring up kindness at some point. Buffalo's certainly not the norm in the Northeast when it comes to that.

Had a nice long discussion about the flight from the Rust Belt to the Sun Belt in economics class the other day... Most of it centered around Gary because that's definitely the closest of the cities to here, but I was able to add some more with Buffalo (Gary's kind of... reeeeeaaaally bad, and it has been for decades, and Buffalo's definitely not on that level; nor is Toledo, for example, so Buffalo brought balance)... That was an interesting discussion, albeit kind of a rabbit trail.
