Less than 24 hours ago, a magnitude 7.2 struck off the coast of Japan.

Tsunami warnings are in effect for most of the coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean.

So what's going on here? Are we getting that many more massive earth quakes, or is the media just reporting more of them?

being both Japan and Chile are in the pacific, could El Nino be a reason for these earthquakes or could it be related to the Haiti quake in anyway???

There's no possible way for these quakes to be related to El Nino.

As far as the Haiti quake, I don't know enough about seismic activity to give you a definitive answer there.

k, I just didn't know that the weather extremes recently could have done something to the plate to shift. Lets hope the Tsunami's don't cause too much destruction. That's all this world needs right now

it's just regular tectonic activity...these things tend to roll through in swarms.
Hawaii is on alert for tsunami activity around 3pm EST.

I'm eagerly awaiting a nice shake up around here.

I guess "fun" is in the eye of the beholder......

We had a couple of jolts while I lived in St. Thomas. We had one large jolt in the middle of the night. My (then) husband and I were sound asleep--3:30 a.m. when it hit. I was out of the house like a space shuttle launch, buck-ass nekkid, while he was still in the bed!

Another time, we were on the beach, about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, on St. John. I felt it; he didn't. Maybe a 2.3 on the Richter scale, but enough to cause a little ripple in the sea, with 1-2' wave breaks.

The last one I felt before I moved off island was while I was at work, bartending. The bar was like most; open air type shacks. This one was in a small marina, on the lagoon. I ran out of the bar to the parking lot and left the customers sitting there, open-mouthed. When I returned to the bar, I could see the ripple from the seismic activity make it's way into the lagoon, making waves crash against the dock.

I felt like running around shouting, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

I guess it's the fact that California is built pretty well for seismic activity...it would take a huge earthquake to cause real damage much less fatalities around here.

The last big one we had my wife was still working at the time...on the 14th floor of a high rise in downtown LA.
She said the building was swaying 5 feet in each direction for 40 seconds...now THAT would scare the hell out of me.

I guess I associate earthquakes (however small) with the devastation and human misery I see portrayed after cataclysmic seismic events. I forget that most (at least on the mainland US) buildings in quake-prone zones are built to withstanding prolonged seismic activity.

I was in my house in Lake George when we had a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that lasted 10 seconds.

First earthquake I've ever experienced.

Small compared to many others, but it was a TON of fun. I was grinning the whole time.

we had an earthquake here a few weeks ago. we usually get a small one ever so often. that one was in Illinois, but you could feel it here, i guess. i was a asleep.
