I would love to have more players like Grier that don't need a coach to get them to work. However, a complete roster of those types of players is a pipe dream.

When the team does start to slip, I want a coach that knows how to react to it and right things. We'll see if making them hit the bikes does the trick, but I think it will.

This should not be "punishment" - Just like watching video and dissecting it after the fact should not be "punishment". Just like skating hard, for about an hour, each and every practice, should not be "punishment". Just like lifting weights after each and every game, for about an hour, should not be "punishment".

These should be standard operating procedures, for any team who's goal it is to elevate their game-readiness, in preparation for a long, healthy season and a deep Cup-run, without let-down.

It's what the "pro's" do. Look at Brind'Amour, Drury, Modano, Iginla, Koivu, Jason Blake, Mark Recchi, Doug Weight, Brendan Shanahan....

One isn't "born" successful or elite - One works at it, every moment of every day of their professional lives.

Any less? And one suffers a petulant and undisciplined and inconsistent team: The current Buffalo Sabres (and their dishwater incarnations of previous seasons.)

I'm sorry ice, but intensively riding bikes directly after a game is NOT standard operating procedure.

Some guys will hop on light for 5 minutes to slowly cool down their muscles and stretch, but many don't do anything at all.

It's not going to be a pretty practice for them today, either.

That is almost the exact words of Herb Brooks in Miracle..all that's missing is "Goal line.....That one!"

I like this. Not all the time when they give a poor effort, but when they play like that, then heck yes. Make them suffer.

Go back and read what I wrote, please.

It should not be necessary to "punish" players who are already at the top of their game.

...sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

Apparently, they are no where near "the top of their game" - Ergo, the "carrot and stick approach", because it seems that ALTHOUGH LINDY TAKES A "WE'RE ALL MEN HERE, AND KNOW TO DO THE RIGHT THING..." APPROACH:

He's fucking mistaken and his team is an ill-coached, ill-inspired and ill-disciplined, unprofessional bunch of little bitches.

...who need to be spanked like naughty little boys.

Suggesting that they're nowhere close to others in the NHL due to the fact that they need to be punished is a faulty assumption.

Even the best of the best have nights like these Ice.

Lets take the Calgary Flames. They got blasted 7-1 earlier this season by the Blackhawks, and the discussion after the game from the coaches and players was the same.

Speaking of the Blackhawks, they dropped a 3-0 decision to the DUCKS of all teams, and the discussion after the game was how they didn't move their feet and play like a team:

Quote:
We didn't get back to what made us successful in that game -- and that is hard work and playing as a team," Chicago center John Madden said. "We were a little soft out there, myself included.

By this point last year, we had already seen 10 games or more similar to the New Jersey game.

The fact of the matter is, they've given us reason to be happy with the level of intensity so far this season, as it's far, far above where they were last year.

Right now, you're blowing up one disappointing loss into something way bigger than it needs to be.

Put the game in the waste basket, work hard, and come out strong in your next one.

I would have loved it if instead of having the team get on the bikes after the game he had them do lightning drills on the ice in front of what was left of the HSBC crowd. Combine physical pain with public humiliation and your really have an effective deterrent against future laziness.

ETC wins this thread. That would have been the perfect punishment. These are professional athletes, they can take a bike workout with ease, but being humiliated in front of their hometown fans, after a night of being humiliated in front of their hometown fans.... That would definitely kick their asses into gear.
I'm all for that approach. Add some insult to injury so they don't play like shit again.
Either that or Lindy should just get the belt out.

...meh.

It's all "huff and puff", and they might win a game or two.....then...

Back to the same old shit.

Whatever. I'm extremely unconvinced. 12 years of Ruff and Regier...and we're STARTING to get gritty personnel, and get tough on our players.

*yawn*

Wake me when we become a "pro team" and decide to enter the NHL, with a professional front-office; and not this "pity show", that hometown fans just can't give up on.

Gotta break some friggin eggs, to make a damn omelette. Hurt feelings? What about my 40 years of hurt feelings? Yeah.

Fill those stands. Sell those Pommers and Max jerseys...Max slug jerseys are still selling; believe it or not. That's Buffalo.

Nuff sed.

Is this similar to "you gotta Billieve"? I'm so glad everyone else is so chipper about good 'ol Lindy and co. We could list all the blunders again to remind them, but why beat the dead horse anymore. Everyone around the NHL knew this was a tougher part of the schedule than the beginning of the season, and they ARE faltering. I hope it gets turned around fast, but I agree with you that most of this crap from Lindy is lip service. I mean, come on, these guys are all adult PRO athletes. Do they really need to have their Dad mad at them to perform better?? Seriously??

He is PISSED. And he said, "They're in there riding the bikes right now. If we're not going to work in the game, we're going to work after it."

I love it.

He doesn't sound pissed... He sounds like he is trying to sound like he cares.

LOL, N1.

When they get off the bikes and finish their ice cream, they are gonna have to spend some time in the iron maiden. Bad, BAD Sabres.

Thank god Lindy finally showed off some balls!

Nice bike ride after the game and a 3 hour practice the following day.
By time someone lit a fire beneath these guys asses!

I love being a Sabres fan, and I love how passionate the natives are about their teams.

But sometimes, they come up with the most ridiculous things and bitch and moan so much it drives me absolutely insane.
