A little more complex than Ubuntu?
Well, Ubuntu and Suse are what I would consider the most user friendly, but any linux distro is as complicated as you want to make it grasshopper.
Fedora (CentOS, or whatever) is probably the next logical step although I haven't used it in a while.
So do you want to feel like a geek and have to work for every little victory OS speaking?
FreeBSD or Net BSD may be up your alley (note that is UNIX and not linux).

I actually just tried Ubuntu 9.10 a few hours ago. I noticed it ran slower (simple things like opening folders and Mozilla felt like it took forever), and made my laptop considerably hotter, than Windows 7. Back I go...
It's a shame, the concept seemed really cool and this laptop isn't much for gaming either, so not much lost there if I were to switch.
Well something isn't right if Windows 7 runs faster...good lord.
Gnome or KDE?
