I'd much rather have Ovechkin, Crosby, or Malkin at ten million than Kovalchuk.

kovalchuk isn't worth that, why isn't he a top 5 point producer? Why isn't he a top five goal scorer? Why isn't he a top 5 +/-?

Until he has everyone of those stats, he isn't a ten million dollar player.

Ovechkin is the best player in the league and he doesn't even earn 10 million a year, Crosby and Malkin are probably the second best players in the league and don't even earn 9 million a year.

I think someone will give him that much, but he isn't even worth 7.5 Million Gaborik is earning.

Tip: Look at the Atlanta roster, and name the playmakers.

Well let me also say, Look at when Crosby put up 120 points, who did he have? Also look at when Ovechkin did 112 points, the Capitals weren't a very huge threat of an actual team yet, oh and when Malkin put up 110 points or whatever, he didn't have Crosby to help him.

Kovalchuk would probably be a plus player if he was on a team with a few more playmakers, but what about when he had Hossa, or Heatley?

He, like Heatley, is a sniper. Hossa isn't a playmaker. Kovalchuck has reached 50 GOAL SEASONS. Ovechkin and Crosby are different types of players.

Past two years

Kovy 2008-2009: 43 goals.
2007-2008: 52 goals

Ovechkin 2008-2009:56 goals
2007-2008:65 goals

Ovechkin is 9.2 mill, Kovy 7.5 your saying you wouldn't take him for. Kovalchuck on a good team I think can put up 60 goals.

I guess I'd take Kovy for 7 million, but for 9 million I better be getting Ovechkin, or Crosby, or Malkin.

I want someone who can score, pass the puck, is going to be a Plus player, and who will draw two defenders every time and still pot 60 goals and get 50 or so assists.

Not sure about his makeup, his salary expectations; or what Atlanta would want for him. Not sure how he would fit in under a Lindy Ruff coached team. But damn; what an offensive talent. Often spectacular. Easily top ten talent.

Well some Rangers think they'll get him. I highly doubt it.

Rangers are overloaded with big fat contracts (Drury, Gaborik, Lundqvist, Redden to name a few) no way they are able to free up that much cap space + they don't have the talent Atlanta is looking for.

He's a good player yes but not worth over 9 millio. We'll see him with Jagr in the khl soon..

I wonder if he really cares about winning a Cup?

Everything the Rangers do looks sick before the season starts.

The past couple seasons, they've not done too well putting a complete team together. Should-be contenders on paper kind of look bad in reality if it's that team.

Mark my words right now, Kovalchuk will be a Ranger, they'll buy out Drury, and another roster player, especially with the young talent coming up, and they will sign Kovie.

Why? Because they make nearly 300M in advertising money every single year, they have the means to do it, and they must win in NY, or they face HEAVY media criticism.

Grier came back to us, maybe Drury would to? That would be amazing. I wouldn't expect much out of the guy but to have him back would be sweet.

Assuming Drury was bought out this off season, the Rangers would have the following dead money on their cap:

2010-2011: $1,216,667
2011-2012: $4,216,667
2012-2013: $2,166,667
2013-2014: $2,166,667

For a team that has historically spent to the cap every year, this would not be good for them.

all they need is a dummy corporation (team) to appear so they can trade Drury for a 3rd or 4th round pick and expiring deals this year so that dummy team (insert florida team here) can take the cap hits for the next years. Bettman would loooooove that.

Yeah, 7.5 mill is enough, but 9 mill is for someone who isn't lazy. But Kovy will score if he can get a decent shot off almost every time.

And that is really a dumb observation. Look at Malkin, Ovechkin, Datsyuk. They all backcheck and hit and have skills, except one likes to injure people...

COUGH Ovechkin COUGH!

Maybe he just wants to retire earlier? (throwing around his precious knees like that)

no way in hell the NHLPA would allow kovalchuk to walk away to russia. no. fucking. way. if the PA orchestrated the soupy trade (speculation), then it will orchestrate a free agent signing to keep him in north america.

Why not? They let Jagr walk. He was getting offers at the cap max and he went to the KHL because he could make more money there.

Teams will be hard pressed to meet Kovie's numbers, and I doubt that he'd listen to NHLPA pressure to stay here if the KHL threw the right numbers at him.

We need to make him an offer. $6M and God status in the city of Buffalo. That's worth $3M right?

But it is still up to Kovie to sign that contract, not the NHLPA's.
