The lack of injuries is either a blessing or a curse. I'm sure Sekera's play in the Olympics will give Darcy a decision on whether to trade Lydman or not

I am so tired of hearing the excuses.

We can't mortgage away our future
This guy or that guy has this issue or that issue so we shouldn't go get him
We can't give up this player/prospect or this prospect/player

You have to give to get. Darcy can make these two deals, and he can keep both Horton and Kaberle longterm with Roy, Vanek, Connolly, Pomminville, Myers, Miller and Goose. Not that he would, but it can be done.

Take a look around the league Ladies and Gentlemen, those teams that are stocking up for the run, their fan base loves em for going in and taking a stab at the prize.

I will disagree with a few things:

1) Horton is not the player that Sabres fans wish that Stafford would be. Horton is a better goal scorer than Stafford. But, Horton's physical game is almost as streaky as Stafford's and that is a big reason why the Panthers MIGHT consider moving him.

FYI, Florida's GM has said that there will NOT be a fire sale......

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/flor ... 5784.story

2) This may not be the right season to go "All In". Miller is under contract for 4 more seasons after this year. Personally, I think it may be a year or two too soon to go all in. Why? Here goes:

A) Our best defenseman is a rookie. I'd rather have him get some more seasoning.

B) Miller has a history of wearing down. He is on pace to play in 71 games this year and he had a heavy workload for Team USA at the Olympics. Next year the Sabres might be able to use Enroth more than they have been able to use Lalime this year.

C) Too many offensive leaders are having down years. Connolly has been good with 55pts in 60 games. But, Pominville, Roy, and Vanek are all having down years offensively.

3) There are no key UFAs-to-be on the roster. Grier, Mair, Ellis, Tallinder, Lydman, and Lalime are the players that are slated to be UFAs after the season. I'd like to see Grier back and you could make an argument for trying to keep Tallinder or Lydman. But, it's not like when they had Briere & Drury staring UFA in the eye making it an obvious "Go for broke" season.

Next year you have Connolly, Rivet, and Montador hitting UFA, so there may be a slight bit more pressure to do something a year from now.

4) You might have more firepower a year from now with Myers & Kennedy growing and perhaps Ennis & Kassian fighting to make the roster as well.

I'm all for going "All In" while Miller is still in his prime.

I'm just not sold on this being the ideal year to do so.

I agree with most of this.

But that's also why the moves he'll be making won't be rental players. They'll also benefit us next year and possibly the following year.

While our forwards are in down years offensively, don't forget that the Devils cup win in 2003 was a year where all of their forwards were having down seasons as well.

Also, Tallinder and Lydman are definitely important UFAs. They've anchored our blue line for a number of years now and were integral parts of our playoff runs back in 05-06 and 06-07.

Just some things to think about...

Doesn't have to be a fire sale to take a stab for Horton. I don't think anyone on Florida at the moment is safe (except Vokoun I believe) if the right offer comes around.

I don't believe Miller is ever going to get any extra rest - Lindy's proven he can't really manage goalies very well.

Horton is in the Vanek-Pominville "Core player" area for the Panthers.

That's why they signed him to the extension.

While I'd love to see Horton here, my guess is that Florida will want a lot more for him than Regier will be willing to give up.

The same goes for what Burke will want for Kaberle. Burke will want an arm and a leg for a PP QB defenseman who is under contract beyond this season and is currently 3rd in the league in points by a defenseman.

I'd love to see the Sabres get Horton & Kaberle as they would both fill needs and neither is a rental.

But, I don't see Regier getting those jobs done because he tends to overvalue players that he already has.

I heard that we can get Jack Johnson for pretty cheap, around $10.

REGIER DID NOT THROW AWAY A 2ND ROUNDER ON MOORE. REGIER GAVE TORONTO THE 2ND ROUNDER THAT HE GOT FROM MOVING KOTALIK.

Duh I know they received the 2nd rounder from Edmonton which they should of kept after they unloaded Kotalik. That's all I'm saying. You have your opinion on this team and I have mine.

I hear that. I'm crossing my fingers though that one of these days we'll be on the winning end of one of those blockbuster trades where a stupid GM gives away a good player for a bag of pucks. ;)

I agree with most of this as well but will add a few things.

I don't think Florida is gonna unload Booth, Weiss and Horton at least not all of them. Maybe one if the deal is too good to pass up.

Luke Adam might be fighting for a roster spot as well.

I agree I don't think this is the ideal year just yet. Maybe a year or two from now.

Yeah Milbury needs to still be GM somewhere so he can unload all the great players his NY Islanders once had.

The problem is that most of those trades in today's NHL involve taking advantage of teams that get into cap jail.

Just like the Bruins had to move Kessel this past off-season, there will be other teams making moves like that around the league.

The questions then will be are the Sabres in a cap situation where they can take advantage and are they willing to give up the assets to improve the club.

The Chicago Blackhawks impending situation with the extensions for Kane, Toews, and Keith have caused Chicago to move Cam Barker and other moves are expected. And if they can't move Huet, then they should be a team that the Sabres are talking to about some of their forwards and a defenseman or two.

Only time will tell....

Dreger on Kaberle's NTC:

Quote:
No list or interest in waiving no-trade from Kaberle as of this morning. Unless something remarkable happens, he's staying in Toronto.

but will the black hawks make moves now, or wait until they take the shot at the cup. none of those new contracts hit until the off season. I would assume their GM doesn't want to wait that long to have to drop the cap space but if he thinks a guy like sharp is going to propel them to the cup i don't see him being offered up as bait at this moment unless something off the wall crosses chicago's plate. I'd say the same could go of byfuligien and Versteeg. though i'd bet chicago is trying to sell huet for a back up goaltender, for their prospect, who is either a career back up or free agent. Maybe turco, maybe, someone from the island.

Chicago needs to make moves now to take advantage of teams that may make some rash moves to make a playoff run.

For next year, they're already at a $57.57M cap hit, and that's with only 14 players under contract. With the cap expected to drop a couple million, they're in a world of hurt.

If you're buying, you have a legit shot at a couple guys on that roster for nothing but draft picks. They NEED to dump salary.
