the thing is, the NHL is a multi nationality league. you want to promote the USA olympic team, sure. show american players. you cant promote american players for a multi-nationality league. so, of course they are going to market the best, and most recognizable players. thats just good business. like it or hate it, crosby and ovechkin being the face of the NHL has helped the league leaps and bounds, especially after a near disaster with the lockout. now, if you want to promote the league in a region, then yes, you market your regions best player. who do the red wings promote here? pavel dastyuk and lidstrom. and it works.

I'm talking about promoting your US players to Americans, not to Canada.

Show USA only commercials with US hockey players in every US city with a hockey team.

And do the same for Canada with Canadian hockey players. I mean also show the best players in the league also in all markets, every Canadian, Russian, American, and Euro needs to be promoted.

Not the ones who can suck Bettman's dick the best because he has the biggest lips.

Well, Ryan Miller is going to be on The Today Show tomorrow morning, and has interviews with both Vanity Fair and VH1, so things are going pretty OK for him, I guess ;)

there is so much wrong with this post, no amount of face palm can accurately portray it.

Apparently Crobsy has pissed off the NHL marketing department big time by turning down the opportunity to do the Letterman top 10 list.

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/more_spo ... z0hVisWo3x

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- Maybe Sidney Crosby is a fan of Jay's or maybe he was upset at not being invited to Dave's Super Bowl bash with Oprah, but folks around the NHL sure would be interested in learning even one of No. 87's reasons for rejecting David Letterman's invitation to host his Top Ten while the Golden Boy was in New York this week.

Upon learning of the snub, Slap Shots was told that this wasn't the first time Crosby, who last year declined to appear on NBC's "Today" show following Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup victory, had rejected a request from Letterman's "Late Show."

We only can imagine the demands on Crosby's time. Yet, in the days that hockey was front-page and back- page material after Canada gold, U.S. silver in overtime attracted more television viewers in the States than any game since the Lake Placid Miracle in 1980, it's difficult to understand why the NHL's most recognizable player and ambassador refused to spread the gospel.

Rest assured that league personnel who have been ridiculed for not having the imagination or wherewithal to capitalize on hockey's Olympic exposure, are miffed.

Maybe Crosby thinks that World Wide Pants belong to Alex Ovechkin.

Maybe he knows how many fans are sick of hearing about him...

Looks like he gets trashed either way.

This just wasn't the NHL's doing, USA Hockey was also doing work to get Miller these interviews. Nice :)

Like I posted elsewhere, it's kind of an unwritten rule to do the celebrity thing as the poster-boy of a sport (Peyton Manning, LeBron James, Tiger Woods). It's expected of him.

That being said, I couldn't care less if he turns down every appearance he's offered. There are PLENTY of stars in this league to showcase.

i remember nike hockey, and who they used to pimp out. he was also a detroit boy. funny thing is, out of all the detroit stars to come and go in the last 20 years, yzerman may have been the most beloved, but none topped this guy when it came to promoting hockey: Image

Crosby's obviously taking the hints from fans that we're sick of hearing about him.

I'm not complaining. I'd rather have the likes of Miller and Kane and Parise promoting the league.

I don't have a problem with Crosby being part of the NHL's marketing strategy. He's one of their stars, and should be part of it.

I have a problem with Crosby being the ONLY part of the NHL's marketing strategy.

True. I don't think the NHL is a sport where guys are really all that marketable. The big difference with Peyton and Lebron in the NBA and NFL is that if those two players are on, then it's pretty much impossible to beat them. One player can't carry their team in the NHL like a guy in the NFL or NBA.

Crosby could have a 2g, 1a night and the pens could still get hammered 6-3.
