For those of you just tuning in...

To Buffalo
Raffi Torres
Atlanta 2010 3rd Round Pick
Atlanta 2010 4th Round Pick

What We Gave Up
Clarke MacArthur
Nathan Paetsch
Buffalo 2010 2nd Round Pick

What do you think? Good? Bad? Pretty much the same plus or minus a few draft picks? What do you think the lines will look like?

EDIT: Of course, deals could come in after 3pm. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is pretty much it for the Sabres.

We added a guy with more goals than any of our current forwards...kind of hard to complain...

I thought about it, but it's more important to get the team playing in front of the goaltender better.

I'll hold off on grading until the day is done.

So far, so good.

If anything (knocks on wood like crazy) happens to Miller, this team is royally screwed.

If Torres can add some scoring up front (which we need) then I'm ok with that. As for the goaltending, well, if we have Patty as Ryans backup for the remainder of the year/contract then fine. But only if we'll be seing some of our kids from Portland making the leap next season like Enroth etc.

Still some stuff can dribble in that may have been made last minute...

Yeah... Torres will totally do something for us... Yes...

Another wasted trade deadline. This guy is good, but we need something else at least.

He's done more in the way of scoring goals than anyone currently on our roster.

Grit grit grit grit. This guy hits like a fucking monster. You're going to be surprised.

Well, he's #206 in the league for hits (he has 71 on the season). Maybe he really makes his hits count and the numbers are deceptive, but I'm not thoroughly impressed yet lol.

EDIT: Watching some YouTube clips, the guy can definately hit. He should do it more though! ;)

Torres looked great with EDM during their Cup run, but he dropped off the map after that. He's come back around and still plays with physicality, and is a better player than MacArthur hands down. I'm ok (sort of) with Torres even though he's a pending UFA rental, because Darcy didn't give anything up that he wanted to keep. Mac was a pending RFA and didn't need to be resigned, Paetsch was a pending UFA and wasn't being used anyway, so it's a toss up between a high 2nd rd pick and extra low 3rd and 4th rd picks. That pretty much evens out, and we end up with a better player for two months.

If Torres was under contract, and Darcy was able to trade Lydman for a 2nd rd pick it would have been a very good day. Ultimately though, these changes don't do much aside from being able to get some kind of return for Mac and Paetsch - players that weren't wanted next season. Torres can bring some scoring and grit to the 2nd line, but that alone isn't enough to push this team into contention with Washington or Pittsburgh.

Hecht - Connolly - Pominville
Torres - Roy - Stafford
Vanek - Kennedy - Grier
Ellis - Mair (Gaustad) - Kaleta

Lalime didn't even play that bad last night, the team didn't start to play until the last 5 minutes trying to tie the game up.

If this team plays in front of Lalime we'd win more games with him in.

seems like the pretty typical darcy moves...if torres was signed to at least a few more years, then it would have been good....since he's not...it seems like he just made 2 moves to make some moves...this move will not get us past the pens this year...and it won't help us next year....so pretty much, the deals do nothing for this year or next....

i guess we can only hope torres likes buffalo and we can sign him to a reasonable contract

Why are people afraid of the Pens?

the Pens aren't going far this year, not without losing both Scuderi and Gil who both of those [players won game 6 and game 7 with saves of the year on net for them.

Pittsburgh also lost a few too many key role players to repeat this year. They'll run into a very physical team and get utterly destroyed.

Every talking head in the hockey world sees Washington and Pittsburgh as the East contenders. The East is weak compared to the West, but those are the top two teams fwiw.

I think the Devils are still way stronger than Pittsburgh, especially when Kovalchuk gels even better with who he is playing with.

Washington and Jersey are my picks in the East basically. Philly if they get their shit together which it seems they are starting to get it together.
