The Sabres have just taken the ice for practice in HSBC Arena and Lindy Ruff has, in fact, shaken up his lines as he promised he would after Wednesday night's sleeper against the Capitals.

Newcomer Raffi Torres is here and will be wearing No. 17. He's on left wing with Derek Roy and Jason Pominville. The other lines are:

Thomas Vanek-Tim Connolly-Drew Stafford
Mike Grier-Tim Kennedy-Jochen Hecht
Adam Mair-Matt Ellis-Patrick Kaleta

I'm real interested to see how not just Torres, but everyone else plays on Friday.

Practice lines get jumbled all the time. We'll have to wait for the game to see what Lindy likes best...and then they'll change again anyway.

Lindy said last night it was time to change the lines. This is most likely the combination he's going with on Friday.

See Torres play in practice, and hear him speak to the media.

I like mid-interview how he says "Hell, I'm just trying to say what you guys wanna hear" when asked about how he'd liven up the lineup. It's a relief to hear a player say that in an interview. Instead of Pommer's cliche interview skills

I find it comical that we just traded for a player with 19 goals and he automatically becomes our leading scorer.....thats sad

On paper, the Vanek - Connolly - Stafford line should be awesome.

We need lindy to tell his players that these lines are going to be it. Talk to each other, find out where each other likes to go and work with each other. Every time he shuffles the lines that mindframe gets ruined

Vanek - Connolly - Stafford has been tried before. Vanek and Connolly have been together before. Virtually every possible combination has been out on the ice, and we see nothing but inconsistency or flat out fail. That doesn't mean the practice lines can't start to work, or whatever combos show up tomorrow night. If the team - down to every player - all start to put a full effort into all the details and play with cohesion, they should start winning again. Short of that the lines don't mean squat.

It was together last year also. If I remember correctly the experiment was pretty lackluster, aside from Staffords hat trick in front of his uncle when we beat Edmonton by some extraordinary amount.

I figure one of two things will happen.

Either Torres' grit and willingness to do the dirty work in the corners will rub off on Roy and Poms . . .

. . . or Roy and Poms' desire to make the highlight-reel pass will rub off on Torres.

Here's hoping the former occurs instead of the latter.

{Or, at least, the former occurs before the latter ...}
.
