It seems like a lot of other people on this board are so angry at Darcy, but it's not like there was much else and Torres instantly becomes our top goal scorer. He plays hard every game and goes to the areas guys like Roy won't go to. I am sad to see Paestch go, he too worked hard and I think deserved a roster spot more than Butler, but hopefully he gets time in Columbus. Regardless, it's not like Ray Whitney was available, if he had gone somewhere else, I would be upset, but he didn't move. Ponikarovski and Torres play a similar game, so you can't really complain there. If you move Tallinder and Lydman, you lose a lot of experience for the playoffs and throw a guy like Weber (who sucked in the pre season) into that situation, not the way you want him to learn. Face it, most of the moves in at this deadline were nothing. Prospects you've never heard of for 6th and 7th round picks. Wolski is a floater and insanely inconsistent, so you can't honestly say you would want him, especially in Buffalo, nobody would want him. So when you look at the facts and who was actually available, Torres was one of the best pickups and the best Darcy could make.

Feel free to merge this with another Torres topic, but I just wanted to get this out there.

I really like it.

We'll see if I still feel that way after tomorrow night.

I think I will.

Hopefully he'll pull a Bernier and get 2 goals, but then keep it up after that.

I think that when you look at Darcy's track record of deadline moves, acquiring Torres is one of the better ones.

Time will certainly tell though.

Yup. It's about hindsight, not foresight.

That said, I actually agree with you, but trades can't be graded until you see the results.

As you said, time will tell.

I don't think anyones terribly upset about the Torres trade itself, Paetsch wasn't really even playing and a 2nd... well... you have to give up something of real value in any trade. Plus we got a 3rd and a 4th back from dumping MacArthur to ease that blow. And hopefully Raffi can bring his hard nosed game to an otherwise lazy, uninspired Sabres roster (other than Miller and perhaps Myers).

I think the problem is that people wanted more moves. Guys like Stafford probably could've been moved, especially if packaged perhaps with Lydman or one of our UFA's, for something decent or perhaps more picks. At least then there would've been more room to give some of our hungry AHL guys a shot... and we don't just lose UFA's at the end of the season for nothing.

People are just mad because their stupid pipe dreams never come into fruition because they don't know the first thing about running a hockey team, but since they watch it on TV and listen to gossip and fodder they believe that they do.

I love that we got Torres. Hopefully he'll inject life into these losers.

the more i look at it i like it though i think we may have been able to get away with a 3rd and paestch, heck throw another slacker in the mix. though we will have to see how things come to fruition, if he can motivated these slackers and provide that spark this team seems to need, i'll like it more. I may have wanted something bigger but i'll give darcy that the summer is more the time for roster changes than the trade deadline.

I like the Torres trade just was hoping for more moves. Obviously one isn't enough to wake this team up. If we somehow manage to make the playoffs we're in huge need of a tough guy, otherwise Miller will get run over and over.

But whatever this team needs to get it done its not about the top secret system, nor all on Miller our top six simple has to be better. They all are making elite money so play like it otherwise don't let the door hit you.

+1

Torres is what this team needs more of: hard working, gritty, and has decent hands.

Too bad he doesn't have a clone that they could have traded Stafford for!

I like the trade. I think Torres will excel here. He always plays tough and has put up some goals on weaker teams. None of the players I wanted to trade for were moved, except Torres, so I think it was a great deal. I like seing Paetch moved, not ecause I didn't like him, but because now he'll get a chance to play (one of the only d-men who realizes a wrister from the point is better than a slap shot.) MacArthur for picks is good too. He's a RFA, so this move stops Darcy from overpaying him and then not being able to move him.

I'm hoping that over the Olympics Lindy made a connection with some of the upcoming UFAs from the Canadian team and same with Miller and the US team. Maybe there will be some guys who want to come here.

I agree, I always liked Paetsch and his wrister from the point was sneaky good. He ALWAYS got it through. (Take notes Pominville, Butler).

Before I get the pedestal ready, or the gallows, I'm going to wait and give him a few games under his belt. Let him feel things out and see where he would/will fit in. Like most everyone else has said, Darcy's record for impact moves at the deadline isn't so great. Looking at the stats, Torres brings some added scoring and some muscle upfront and considering the team’s style and play as of late, I hope this rubs off on a lot of the guys who forget how to be solid corner bangers/front of the net players. Also, he should help on the power play. Lord knows, we need it.

If the guy has a mouth on him then hopefully his bark is just as big as his bite on the ice to help motivate these guys. Might be a little iffy being an outsider but his presence can only add to this team.

Time will tell.

What bothers me is that its been said he has no intention of staying. It's like he doesn't intend to even give us a chance, he's just marking time until Toronto calls. That thought just takes the wind out of my sails. :(

I like Raffi Torres' game. He brings it every night.
I don't like the fact he is a UFA. But, for Paetsch and a 2nd it was a great trade only if they had brought in a RWer as well for the playoff push. This trade really made sense to get Paetsch a chance to make a roster somewhere else.

In my opinion anyways, it didn't make a whole lot of sense to give up the 2nd round pick if Darcy know's we aren't contenders this year and he's utilizing a build from within policy. But, ya never know, they may actually surprise the fans and bring up some Portland talent (a guy or 2) to see if we can't atleast go to round 2 in the playoffs.

My real concern here is, I don't see any LWer in Portland that jumps out at me for a line 1 or line 2 slot. Does this mean that come draft day or in FA Darcy picks up a LWer worth a dam? I am wondering on this. The sad thing is, I hate talking about off season pick ups to improve the team while there in a stretch run towards the playoffs, it only reminds me of what Darcy should have done last off season or this past trade deadline.

Kind of ironic he took the #17 since landing with the Sabres. Didn't we see that on another player who was considered a keeper?

I'm not saying the trade is bad, it's the fact that was the only trade that happened other than getting draft picks. Maybe we could have gotten something else other than just Torres.
