I think he hits the nail on the head.

Darcy needs to bring in a scorer, who doubles as a leader.

Ray Whitney might have fit that mold. Hell, Torres could do it in part.

Either way, it's a very intriguing and objective look at the Sabres up and down.

Excellent post PSP.
Hamilton is correct in my opinion, the current players just don't have it. All the more reason another trade for an impact player (under contract, not a UFA) should have been made. Hamilton kind of made me sad. He didn't hold back, just came out and said it, I wonder if they'll let me co host a show with em :)

I'll take a listen at work, but going in I don't put much stock in anything Paul Hamilton says. His credentials on analyzing hockey teams are about the same as mine : pick up games at the Pepsi Center and hours on my couch drinking beer and watching Center Ice.

I usually don't really like what he has to say.

But as an insider, he knows what goes on in that locker room. And everything that was discussed I was suspicious of in the first place.

That said, ONE PLAYER could fix this team. We've just gotta get the right one, and Darcy better get after it this summer.

This team is not one player away from being "fixed".

At least not any one player that will be available to the Sabres this off season.

The Pens aren't trading Crosby here. The Caps aren't trading Ovi here.

I'd love for the Sabres to get guys like Shane Doan, Joe Thornton, and Nik Lidstrom to fill their 3 biggest needs. But, that isn't happening.

You don't need Crosby or Ovechkin to fill that roll, Jimbob.

Briere and Drury were no Crosby or Ovechkin, and they did wonders with this lineup.

You need a leader that will bring you regular scoring. A 75 point per season guy with a big leadership resume.

That player will fix this team. Period.

Squanto, sign me up as a co host on your "analyze Sabres hockey panel". Let me know now, is the beer free or is it BYO? Also, do I need a cushion for that pesky spring on the couch? ;)

I'll work on a sponsor, see if I can get us hooked up with free booze. :)

Couch should be in good shape, I'm not fat enough to have blown out springs yet. :)

Name a 75 pt per season guy with a big leadership resume that the Sabres can add this summer.

Guys like that rarely get traded. And if they hit the UFA market, they get outpriced for the Sabres.

Just look at the crazy contracts that Briere and Drury got and the fact that they are both anchors on their current teams.

Sure. Take a look at this ranger of scorers that we could choose from. This is a list from the end of last season:

Cammalleri was moved this past summer to Montreal.

Tampa Bay could be rebuilding this summer with new ownership, and St. Louis could become available.

Oh hey look! Ray Whitney!

Simon Gange, Jeff Carter, or Mike Richards could be acquired if we offered up Enroth plus picks and a forward.

Dany Heatley got traded last summer, did he not?

Was Brad Boyes discussed in trade rumors at the deadline?

Oh hey #38 on list 2. He really outscored Patrick Kane last year? Must be his wingers were playing like men.

Oh hey #46. Yeah, I guess Roy's wingers WERE playing like men.

Kovalev is not with Montreal anymore.

There's J.P. Dumont. Didn't we let him walk?

I know you don't mean JUST Ray Whitney but he was a bad example.

He was worth a 1st rounder and a prospect or a roster player. No thanks.

He wanted a contract extension with his new team. No thanks.

Carolina kept him because they're going for the playoffs. Not available.

Carolina kept him because offers weren't high enough.

Whitney is a damn good hockey player. He keeps himself in great shape, and he's ultra competitive. He's won a cup.

He's very close to what we need. Look at this stats from last season above.

He could be had for the right price, too.

You'd pay a lot, but when you're 1-2 players away from being a contender, who the fuck cares?
