Dude, strategically I honestly cant say which is better...all i know is I get a little tickle right in my nutsack when that long legged freak glides past the D and walks in on net. He's SO due to slip one of those past the goalie. The wastes of fucking space roster spots that are on the ice with him should cover his defensive position when he's doing this. Hell, keep two forwards back there, maybe vanek and pominville together can stop one guy.

I would agree if Myers wasn't consistently one of the fastest to get back on defense even after getting caught deep.

Well seriously, you want to pick on Myers?!

Critique, not pick on. He isn't a god.

It won't be long before Tyler Myers replaces Chris Drury as a hockey god.

Asking Myers to not jump into the play as often as he does will reduce his effectiveness as a player, IMO.

This team is a lot better offensively when the defensemen are active and jump start the transition offense.

And Myers has been THE vital cog in generating offense in transition.

Now if you want the team to play boring dump & chase hockey with a passive 1-4 forechecking system, then yeah, put the shackles on the defense.

Myers is not a Chara-esque stay at home defensmen. His hieght is really the only similarity. He plays alot closer to a Neidermeyer, Green, Weber, Pronger kind of hybrid. Offense first, but is still generally quick enough to fly back on Defense if a bobble is made.

The reason myers SCORES as many goals/points as he does is BECAUSE he joins in on all of these rushes. So I'd have to completely disagree with your assessment there stuuuuuuu.

I don't see this as an insult on Myers.

I see it as an attack on Ruff's system that wants the defense to be active in the offense.

And that approach to offense is a good one, IMO.

Ruff can get criticized for things like the PP being ineffective, how he uses back up goalies, and other things. But, asking that his defense thinks defense first all the time isn't a legit complaint, IMO.

Would you rather Ruff plays the system the Flyers and Devils employed in the early 2000's and not let their D men move past the goddamned redline? Come on, allowing the D to jump into the play is by no means the worst thing about Lindy's system. In fact, I think its one of the systems few redeeming qualities.

Exactly. Our forwards can barely put it in the net as it is. Having our defense jump in the rush, especially with the crazy offensive threat that Myers is, is basically our only hope. Unless we get a few ridiculously skilled and hard-working forwards there is no way that we score half as many goals as we do if the D doesnt play some offense. From what I saw at the Dallas game I was at, it seemed like a forward always went back to cover Myers spot on the blue line anyway.

Personally I would like our most unique, creative, fastest player to play to his skills, which he is evidently doing and doing well. Risk-Reward.

I agree all three have been very good this year.
In Grier I say very good because you getting a solid two way player who is great on the penalty kill and he's been something this team has been missing for two years.

Unfortunately, Ruff has two choices:
1) Play the trap and pray to God that we score at least one or two goals, while holding the other teams to just no goals, or at the most one.
2) Allow our offensive minded defenseman (Sekera, Myers, Rivet at times) to carry the puck up and join the rush. It's the only way any offense seems to be getting on the board.

I say go with what works. I like option two, because it leads to a more exciting game; however, it allows the other team to easily score on us, as well.

I still say #2 gives us the better chance to win as long as we have a solid stay-at-home defenseman and maybe a defensive forward backing up the rushing d-man.

stop ripping on myers.....the kid is revolutionizing the position.....he is rushing the puck like bobby orr (i know he isn't cashing in as much but give him time).....and in a few more years not only will be still be rushing it but he will also have a lot more weight on his frame to crush opponents also....

in case you had not heard...some guy named Scotty Bowman said that Myers is the best skating defenseman he has EVER seen in his 60 years of hockey....

barring injury, i'm predicting he makes the Hall of Fame

He missed one comma in what is otherwise a well-punctuated post. So what?
