Our offense is the missing key. We need some goalscorers. I know I know, Vanek and Roy. And Ennis soon. But they're pretty streaky. Multi point games then disappear faster then David Copperfield's elephant.

If we had a decent, 20-25 goal scorer, then a big scorer (it can be a finisher we need finishers), that would be a cup team.

Bingo!!!!

Connolly, Pomminville and Hecht were supposed to be those 20-25 goal scorers.
But then, Connolly's numbers were on the upswing since D/B left.
Hecht and Pomminville's decreased. That tells me D/B's talent, not the way the game is played, had a significant impact on the teams performance.

And on that note, some will say re-hashing the D/B years is pointless or holds no water.
I use that era as a standard to gauge Darcy Regier's ability as a GM. I am not interested if others feel the game has changed or not, good managers know how to adapt to change and find success.
That has not happened here in Buffalo. It hasn't progressed at all and has actually led to the start of a rebuild.

I feel sorry for Vanek and Roy, they may have to wait another 2 to 3 seasons before real success is accomplished by consistency and maturity from the teams prospect pool. Regier refuses to go out into FA or the trade market and make it happen, the only hope they have is in Portland.......Now that, is scary.

Umm both Hecht (well not in total points but goals for him) and Pominville had the best season's of their career AFTER D&B left.

Hecht never scored 20 goals until Briere left, and he's done it twice so far. Pominville had 82 points the year after Briere left also. Yes his numbers have gone down since but still.

And would you suggest the little trades he made to try and improve the team weren't trying to make the team better? Because he doesn't go out after Malkin, Toews, Kane, Crosby, Stamkos every night doesn't mean he doesn't trade for something to try and make the club better.

How many 30+ goal scorers get traded in the NHL today? Not many, and are you mad we didn't try and land Kovalchuk and ruin the future of our club then?

Also he doesn't dip into FA, are you crazy mad? Leopold, Monty, and Morrisonn were all added during FA, and who would you say our two best d-men are right now? Two guys we got in FA the last two years, and are playing fabulously together. The game is tighter so we needed to be better defensively, and we have that now.

Actually all three of Connolly, Pominville, and Hecht saw a decrease in production after Briere and Drury's departures.

Evening things out...

Jason Pominville 05-07

1.24 assists per 60 minutes of ice time
2.64 pts per 60

Jason Pominville 07-present
.85 goals per 60 minutes of ice time
1.67 assists per 60 minutes of ice time
2.52 pts per 60

Jochen Hecht 05-07
.86 goals per 60 minuts of ice time
1.41 assists per 60 minutes of ice time
2.27 pts per 60

Jochen Hecht 07-present
.77 goals per 60 minutes of ice time
.91 assists per 60 minutes of ice time

Who's asking for a 30 goal scorer? I thought we were speaking on 20-25 goals.
Also, with regards to Hecht and Pomminville, the season after D/B left is factored into the past 3 in a half seasons.
So they had a good year, what happened to the other 3? "Consistency" come to mind much?
Are we supposed to wait every what? 4 to 5 seasons for them to show up?
The point to be made on your counter point to my post is a moot point, 1 decent season out of 4 does not a Stanley Cup Contender make.

On to the FA signings you bristol about.
Leopold, Monty and Morrisonn are D men and have absolutely zero, nothing, zilch, notta to do with offensive production from a manned and ready forward scoring line. This is oranges and apples, nothing less.

Darcy Regier has done nothing in FA to address the scoring short comings of this team, come on man, we've been talking on this for the better part of 2.5 seasons now.

We need Finishers. You get some finishing goal scorers for Ennis and Roy and we got a team.

Can anyone point to any solid facts that support the idea that Darcy is faultless? All I seem to see is people blaiming Quinn for everything. Darcy has four years to do something to fix the team....but doesn't. Quinn's fault? Am I missing something?

The depressing thing is that Connolly's 2.00 assists per 60 minutes since the lockout put him just a bit below Crosby and 10th in the NHL in terms of assists per 60 minutes since the lockout.

If you aren't given the money to spend, you can't it.

This has been the only year we've had a decent amount of cap space left over for some time.

You know Alex, the whole stats are great and all, but it's moot since league wide scoring is down almost 3 goals per game to like 5.2 goals per game instead of what it was right at the lockout.

Wait a minute, you say that Darcy hasn't been given the money to spend, and yet, you openly admit that out of the last 4 seasons (including this one) this is the only season with a bit of cap room.
Well then, the past 3 seasons it sounds like Regier was given all the money he would need right up to the cap ceiling to get something done.
Once again, the thought that Regier hasn't had the cap capital to accomplish something is ridiculous.
Regier could have made trades, signed FA's worth a shit and done different things than he has done.

It comes back to the fact that Regier failed to address the lack of offensive firepower on this team with the departure of Drury and Briere. Hell, in the presser after they left to FA Regier actually stated that this club would not be as competitive. Thats his own words.

Its not just having or not having the cap space... its the meddling ways of the Quinn... Its been said Quinn screwed up the Drury deal... who's idea was it to oppose signing players during the season, remember that whole debacle, was that a Quinn management decision or a Darcy decision? Did Darcy extend any players during the season without Quinn around? That may answer that question... We simply do not know how much influence the incompetence of Quinn
pushed on to Darcy... it is hard, from where we sit, to figure out where Quinn stops and Darcy begins. All you can do is cut Quinn out and see what Darcy does...

Would you say Darcy knows hockey talent? Yes, he has whiffed, all teams whiff, but has he drafted better than worse over the years? And what resources is he given for talent evaluation compared to other clubs?

Did he over spend on some talent at the outset of the salary cap era? Probably, BUT has has he done recently? Morrison, Monte, Leopold, all look like solid signings...

And did Darcy not make some comments against "upper management" at some point in the last 12 months, maybe around the Tim Kennedy issue? Wasn't this the first sense of frustration Darcy let on to the media? So, how frustrated is Darcy with his Quincuffs? Again where does Quinn stop and Darcy begin?

Darcy is one of the most respected hockey guys in the league, you can not argue that! You have given him over 1000 games with a lot of success... not all the success we want, but competitive year in year out... All I am asking is to cut Quinn out and give Darcy 82 more games... thats all, give the guy a shot with out the restraints and complications of a Quinn.

You've given him 1000.... give him 82 more sans Quinn... thats all...

Haha maybe so, but you can't deny the fact league scoring is down.

And Slesh, it was how he had spent the money he had. What I meant was he had the wrong guys and couldn't unload them even though he had spent close to the cap. He had to wait until they were gone and when he had plenty of room to try and sign a big name guy with the extra space he has, he wasn't allowed because of an internal budget. That is what I meant.

Geez Sky relax. You're going overboard talking about whether OT wins count or not. Of course they do. That stat doesn't tell the whole story, but it's not pretty and reflects their mediocre play so far. That's all.

No I'm not, if you're not going to include OT wins as a good wins, then take them out of the equation all together then and not continue to use how many games they played.

I've seen the team play, they sucked early one, and have really picked up their game these last 10-15 games and aren't as terrible as they were early on.

Honestly, it's a stupid stat to look at, and shows nothing about how the team has played.

Pittsburgh - 16 reg wins - 4 OT wins
Philadelphia - 16 reg wins - 1 OT win
Montreal - 17 reg wins - 1 OT win
Washington - 13 reg wins - 5 OT wins
Detroit - 14 reg wins - 3 OT wins

These are the best teams in the NHL right now. Buffalo has 6 reg wins and 5 OT wins. This isn't just a correlation with some obscure stat that doesn't mean anything. If you're playing good hockey you're going to win more in regulation and be more successful than having to roll the dice in the make believe world of 4-on-4s and shootouts. This is not a revelation, this is pretty basic stuff.

Wash has 5 OT wins, the same number Buffalo has in OT.

You're stats are irrelevant now.
