A few suggestions:

Less slug - maybe a different banner at the top? The current one looks strangely familiar.

The subforums take up too much screen space at the top of each forum - maybe they can be condensed and the topics can start further up the page?

For example, I'd move the "Sabres Hockey" text to the top of the page, and see if you can condense the space under it. Putting "Sabres Hockey" on the same line as "Mark Forums Read" might save some space.

Also, I'd get rid of the first "forum" bar at the top of the subforum indexes, and just leave the second line.

But for a few hours, this looks great! It's a major blow to the NHL boards when one guy can make a better forum in a few hours.

Try the mod called "Custom Title Mod." It's been in beta for what seems like forever, but it seems to work pretty good. It'll put a field in the user control panel for adding a custom title, but that can be controlled via permissions set in the ACP...so you could set it that certain usergroups can edit their title while others cannot.

The red font for your username is melting my eyeballs. Can you go with an easier color to digest? Maybe orange or purple?? Actually, the yellow would probably be best...

Something's wrong with every other post (the dark colored ones). Either the separator bars are the same color as the background, or they're just not there.

Also, it seems the info column on the left is variable in width depending on the size of the avatar. Would be nice if it was a fixed width.
