There are more "realities" than one. Many people see China surpassing us like a Ferrari, but I see them having the same growing pains as anyone else, except maybe by multiples of 50. Pollution and human rights will be MASSIVE issues for the Chinese in days to come. Will they be able to afford energy when it becomes less affordable. I think looking at it from an economic standpoint only is foolhardy.

:angry-soapbox: This is why I absolutely hate politics and politicians. IMHO, Our "leaders" have no sense of what a real democracy is. They do what they want, when they want without a second thought on how "we the people" really feel. This country has been going downhill for years and there is no way of stopping it...
We have a representative republic. It is probably better than a direct democracy, because it eliminates the nitwits from having any say. I always get a bit upset when people say, "it's not what the people want". The "people" are interested in Hanna Montana, cheeseburgers, and what their neighbors are doing, not the problems of the world. I'm fine with having smarter than average people represent us all. I just don't want the will of campaign contributor's to reign over that of the people's best interest.
Actually daz, if you want the numbers, here you go.
Out of every 10 potential renewable energy projects Eninthal (my company) is offered a chance to participate, 8 of them are in China.
They will surpass the rest of the world in wind farm build out by 2015. They will surpass Brazil in sugarcane to ethonal by 2018, they will surpass the combined entire globe with solar power output (both thermal and pv) by 2022. Oh, and they will have the most technologically advanced mag-lev rail buildout, both locally (in urban transportation) and nationally (population center to population center) by 2026.
These numbers are not estimates, they are target goals of the Chinese government. Currently, the Chinese have the most sophisticated mag-lev system in the world. They are also looking at vacuum tube technology for transportation of cargo as well as mass transit. That is cutting edge technology and its the Chinese that lead the world in current research and development.
