I went to church on Easter Sunday for the first time since Christmas Eve (a service I truly enjoy). It wasn't a bad service. The only reason I consent to go is that the Pastor is a family friend, good guy, and generally gives a sermon worth listening to.
But (and I'm not trying to be a jerk) I find church to be creepy and a bit mindless, especially when reading in unison, it sounds so weird. It's like 70% following guidelines and 30% actual thinking (The readings and sermon).
That's how I always saw it as a kid. I'd look through the bulletin, and its like okay we have to read these four things and sing these two songs until we get something interesting, like a reading, then another song or whatever and the gospel and sermon, etc.
Maybe a different church is in order then? I remember the unison readings from when I was a kid, and it was a bit odd. The Church I attend now is like, opposite end of the spectrum. My pastor brought a goat on stage on Sunday, I kid you not. It was awesome.
Also, I love that love your enemies was on your mind, Rutledge, because I've been consumed with Luke 6:27 lately. Such goodness. In fact, last night I was at Delaware Park with a couple of my friends and just chillin out on a blanket, and someone was reading that when we got egged. At first we were like 'what the heck' and then the irony of what we had just read hit us and it was just a fit of laughter. Good stuff
