Hey Guys,

I have a Verizon Wireless Windows Mobile 6.1 "PocketPC"....the Samasung Omnia (SCH-I910). I was looking for any techies that could help me out with something. I have a full data package ($30 a friggin month), including full-time 3G wireless internet access. I also have a brand new laptop with a wireless card, but this doesn't help when there are no networks around. That being said, I'm trying to figure out a way to use my Internet signal/connection from my PocketPC for my laptop. It seems like it should be something I can do, but I've been searching high and low and can't seem to find anyone who knows how to do it. I would appreciate any help.

P.S. Im pretty damn savvy when it comes to this stuff too, so please, please, please.......no "Did you connect it to the USB Port?!?!?" questions. Thanks again!

The term you're thinking of is tethering.

Verizon will allow that option.... for an extra fee of course. There are a ton of methods out there to drop software on your phone and enable that without paying Verizon, but of course VZ isn't going to look kindly on you should you get caught.

I can't really help you with specifics for that phone; I haven't used WinMo since 5 on my Treo.

Same here, but did you try bluetooth tethering?

My blackberry can tether to my macbook via USB or bluetooth and OS X just sees it as a "modem" device.
I also have a verizon air card though so I only tethered it to my phone once for shits and giggles.

Some googling turned up this
http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/9781.html

looks like your laptop may need some extra software.

Squanto, thanks for the info, but Im trying to do this legit. And, im already paying verizon for the access at an extra $30 a month. Also, tethering is now the preferred term, thanks for the heads up.

Cross, I would use the Bluetooth capability (laptop has it) but the only issue is the speed of the bluetooth connection is not going to be nearly as fast as it would with a USB 2.0 connection and I've also had friends of mine with different phones/providers verify this as well.

I've done some research, and it looks like with a quick install of VZAccessMananger, as long as you have a data package, you're golden. Im gonna call of course to make sure it doesnt sign me up for some $50 a month service I don't need as well though.

VZAccessManager is what you're going to need, for sure.

Back when I had my Treo, it still wouldn't tether since I didn't have the tethering option on my account. I've been on AT&T since the iPhone 3G release day, so I don't know if they've changed that requirement since then. My guess is that it won't work unless you add tethering to your account, but that's just a guess.

Yes, bluetooth is slower than usb, but your 3G data connection to the cell tower is slower than bluetooth ;)

So it comes down to what is more convenient for you to use, not speed.

Yeah, that's the other point.

I always got a kick out of people back in my cable modem support days who would go out and buy gig-e cards and switches to improve performance on their 3Mb capped internet connection. :p

Did not realize this. The connection on my phone is pretty fast, but its obv only loading mobile web pages. Any comparisons of what using a 3G wireless phone as a modem for my laptop will be like? Im used to a roadrunner, and I know it clearly wont be that fast, I was looking for a rough comparison...

You'll probably get about 1Mb-ish downloads off it. That's about 15% of what you'd get on a maxed out standard RoadRunner connection.

I have a work provided Verizon 3G card , and I get between 1-2Mb, pretty stable and reliable. I don't have need for it often, but it works in a pinch.

Wired did a test and they say Verizon was the fastest 3G with average download speed of 1,940 Kbps

if you want to find out how fast your roadrunner link is go here and run a test:

Notice that's kilobits per second not kilobytes per second...so divide that by 8 to get 0.236 KBps.

Well thanks. Like Squanto said, Im only gonna be using it in a pinch, but I figure if i can do it, and im already paying for it, why not!

yeah, like I said, I have a verizon air card (non-3G) that I use sometimes when I'm on call.
It's fast enough to get the job done but I wouldn't want to use it all day long.

Used to have an air card...man was that thing expensive. Something like $60 a month at the time.

I picked up a Virgin Broadband2Go a few months ago and it's quite useful for me, a very occasional user. Costs $100 upfront and then is pay-as-you-go. Seeing as how I only use it when I'm going to have extended periods of no internet (vacation, etc), it's perfect. Would cost a fortune for daily use though.
