If anyone remembers what I was saying towards the end of the season, and the playoffs game, you'd know I was on the Vanek bandwagon.
He has a lot of scoring ability. Is he captain worthy? Not in my opinion, but I don't think he'll ever strive for that. He isn't a leader type of guy, but then again...besides Grier and Gaustad, who is MORE of a leader on this team than Vanek? (I'm excluding Miller, obviously....)
I'm torn. I've seen the good hockey moves, and great play throughout stretches, but he is not a player that gives 100% every game.
2009-2010 was not a good season for Vanek. It may have been become of injuries, or because of stress with the new(ish) baby at home. I think we tend to forget how bad it was because of his play in the last 5 games (that he played in).
It's nice to root for him when he's on, (Hell, I started a VANEK chant at the party in the plaza in game 1) but it is very frustrating attending a game only to see him dogging a play. He's old enough. He needs to set the standard for the team. In the playoffs, he controlled tempo, but in the rest of the season, he seemed to pot a meaningless goal when we're up by 5.
Tried to be as positive as possible. Of course I love this team, and I want to see Vanek become the player he should be. Here's to a good 2010-2011 season for Vanek and the rest of the team.
That was my avatar on the old boards for a long time.
