Part of owning a sports team is about anticipating losses. Every owner knows this. If Tom Golisano can't handle it, he needs to sell the team to someone who can.
That's not very reasonable for you to say.
Especially considering that those who take losses and plan to sell could not give two shits and let the team leave buffalo.
Tom is operating the club in a manner that ensures it can stay put. I don't see what's wrong with that.
Owning a sports team is a "vanity asset", an asset thats looks good for your image but not in your ledgers. Sports owners get into the business to win because taking a loss is more common than not. Golisano operates the team to try and make money. He's in this business for the wrong reasons.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad kept the Sabres here. But it's not enough at this point. He needs to give two shits.
whats the point of having a team if it will never win?
Ask MLSE
The difference here is the Maple Leafs are a license to print money, and they always will be.
Mike, that's not Quinnisano's reasoning. Their's is, what's the point of having a team if it will never make money? Golisano won't sell it because not even he's dumb enough to incur the PR nightmare of selling the team to someone who will move it, but he (this time meaning Quinnisano) won't do what it takes to win the Cup even if it means a fiscal loss.

I do understand what Darcy says about defense being the position we needed to upgrade. I mean honestly Kennedy isn't really a loss...he was just from Buffalo which made him more special to us all. I know, everyone's mad about the self-imposed cap...yeah, yeah.
My only question is, why were they so worried about paying Kennedy 1m when they just signed Leopold to 3m, and Gaustad, who is a 4th line grinder is making 2.3m? Gaustad has his areas of expertise, but Kennedy I think has a bigger upside. But they won't sign Tim to 1m? GOOSE MAKES 2.3!!!
It never, ever had a single fucking thing to do with Kennedy being from Buffalo.
Also, the Goose example is inadmissible because the Sabres and a different mindset at that point and the league itself had a completely different mindset surrounding free agency.
