I have no idea why people feel this way about numbers. They aren't magical or some religious hockey relic. They're just fucking numbers. Who gives a shit?
So, if a Sabres player was suddenly mauled to death by bears,
and the team retired his number, and the next day some slack jawed equipment manager gave an AHL call up that players number, you wouldn't care at all? Not even a little?
if that bear-mauled player's number was retired, said slack jawed equipment manager wouldn't be able to give out said bear-mauled player's number... Lemieux's number IS NOT retired by the league there could be 29 players in the league wearing 66 and it doesn't and shouldn't matter...

In addition, the number 66 used by Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins had not been worn by any player in the league since his retirement and was generally considered to be 'unofficially retired'
Many years ago the after the retirement of Gretzky's 99 the NHL was talking about retiring the following numbers 11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88. Why? I have no clue

best guess would be to honor:
11 - Gilbert Perreault
22 - Adam Mair
33 - Mark Astley
44 - Alexei Zhitnik
55 - Jochen Hecht
66 - Gino Odjick - the only person not affieliated with buffalo so it seems fair
77 - Chris Gratton
88 - Patrick Kane - because he's from buffalo
Because the NHL LOVES the sabres
