Ovechkin and Crosby are legitimate superstars, but what makes a player a "superstar"? Who else in the league is a legitimate superstar, if anybody?

To me, you can't be a superstar unless you are good enough to put up 100 points more than once, or at least 90 and make up for it with some flare or personality. Flare meaning that you are an exciting player to watch, you try things that are bold and/or different. I appreciate good defense and physical play, but I don't think those things are needed to be put in the superstar category. Everybody has their own idea of what a superstar is or should be.

Take Jerome Iginla for example. Marvelous player, absolutely a star, but is he a superstar? He's pretty much a 90 point guy who fights and plays with a lot of heart. But then again, he's not a player who brings me out of my seat. He doesn't have that element of surprise, that "what is he going to do next" aura.

Then there's a guy like LeCavalier, he became a SS in 06' while on his way to a 50-50 season, but he has since faded away into just a great player. Kind of like Malkin is doing as well, although I have a feeling he will start to dominate again during his next contract year. Ruthless, Russian, mercenary.

Stamkos looks like the real deal...Datsyuk is absolutely a superstar, although he is usually like Mr. Spock out there as far as letting his emotions run wild, so it's difficult to glamorize his game.

Who else besides Ovechkin and Crosby could the league overexpose?

Seems to me that the late 80's and early 90's were the greatest days to be a hockey fan.

I hate it when a person misspells a star's name. Do your research instead of looking like a ponce.

How you didn't mention the Sedins is beyond me. And no Stamkos? Kid is the third best forward in the NHL.

I did mention Stamkos you nazi.

You think the Sedin's are superstars? I guess it's really easy for a guy to become a superstar in your book. To me they are stars, all-stars in fact, and certainly potential superstars. They got one 100 point season between them, be still my heart. I guess Roy and Vanek are superstars too?

I ask you, if you're so sick of Ovehkin and Crosby being shoved in your face, then who should they pimp to the masses besides those 2? Stamkos, I agree he may in fact be a consistent 100 point guy, and he has panache. We shall see. Sedin twins? Yeah, good luck with that.

PAVEL DATSYUK!
PAVEL DATSYUK!

The guy is a convicted brain rapist. Just mentally fucks the goalie with a move you can't even perform in your thoughts.

BnY, Datsyuk is a superstar in my book for sure. But I don't know how to glamorize his game to a Crosby and Ovechkin level. Datsyuk is a Lady Bing type of player and his moves are so insanely sophisticated that I don't think that indifferent viewers have any idea of how awesome he is. Avid fans of the NHL and Red Wings fans can appreciate the awesome that is Paval Datsyuk, but you can't overexpose him. He is too good to be mass marketed. :?

Miller is not dominating the league every season like Hasek, although he certainly has that club in his bag if you'll pardon the pun. Kane and Toews aren't superstars, they are awesome but they don't dominate the league, they don't even have 100 point seasons.

Giroux I think it's spelled, isn't a superstar either. I don't think he will ever be better than a 70 point guy--which is awesome--but simply not SUPERSTAR!!!!!!

100 point scorers since the lockout that are still playing:

Ovechkin 3
Crosby 3

Thornton 2
Malkin 2
Heatley 2

Staal 1
Alfredsson 1
LaCavalier 1
Hossa 1
St. Louis 1
Sedin 1
Backstrom 1

Kovalchuk and Datsyuk are 90's or high 90's just about every season.

As you can see only 2 players really deserve the superstar label and mass marketing over exposure. It's not like they are picking names out of a hat.

you don't need to make 100 points a season to deserve the superstar label. hockey is more than making points for your stats. get rid of your stats-fetish, please.

btw. : who's a superstar - is a very subjective question.

Well, if they can't even score 100 points in the league as a forward, are they really THAT good and THAT consistent?

Can you sell defensive play, and build a player up as a star because he blocks shots?

If I'm the only one who wants to discuss what a SS should be then okay, if you just want to say I'm wrong without stating what you look to be SS qualities well then that's okay too. But at least prove me wrong.

Fact is, we all bitch and whine about Ovechkin and Crosby but rarely do we acknowledge the fact that they absolutely deserve those pedestals.

goaltending is now so even across the board, i cant think of any superstars outside luongo and brodeur, who are really only looked at as super stars because of name only anymore. i miss the 90s goaltenders.

Well you did ask

so obviously a tandem like two twin brothers who play on the same line and are fucking great would be a good choice. Last season Henrik ended with 112 points and Daniel could have finished over the hundred mark as well if he hadn't broken his foot. This season Henrik is leading the league in assists and is 4th in overall points with 49 in 36 games played while Daniel is at 47 points (6th overall) in 36 games played. Now how couldn't these two be superstars?

Also, you don't need to be a top scoring forward to be a superstar in my book. Guys like Miller, Mike Green, Pronger, Chara etc have been in the spot light before and could be concidered in that tier by some people.

there is no need for a list who's a superstar or not.
for a few fans montador is their superstar. or Miller.

ovie and crosby are very good hockeyplayers, but it sucks that the NHL wants you believe that they are the only "big" players of the league

So after about 10 years in the NHL they are just now starting to put up some gaudy numbers.

Whao...how....amazing?

I mean they are great players to be sure, and yeah they are marketable, I'd love to hear more about them and I do enjoy watching them play. But have they really earned nauseating exposure?

If the Sedin's continue to play like this through the playoffs and throughout next season then I would have to say yes, it's time to put them right up there with 8 and 87. Same with Stamkos.

Let's hope they have what it takes.

its just a thread for fun. FFS..

if you score 50 or more points a year, i hold you in high regard. if you score 70 or more, star. 80 or more, super star to me.

the NHL aint what it used to be in terms of star power. thats ok with me.
