They've played simpler, I don't think Roy was always that bad on the PP, but whenever Connolly goes out there I'm still scared shitless with him.
Yep, as simple as keeping your skates moving and keep yourself alive during the play. The Sabres stood around and seemed like they wouldn't shoot the puck until a penalty killer was in a shooting lane. If I'm Vanek why the heck would I want to sit in front of the net and get hacked when the shot or pass isn't going to get through?
Connolly...agreed. Pass, shoot...heck dance a jig, just do something except chicken out and make that late shot or pass that nets nothing.
Its just when Roy tries to put on his "Superman" cape and tries to skate past 3 and even all 4 penalty killers .... and the resulting turnover costing us either 25 or more seconds off the PP or a shorthanded chance against.
Gee Derek Roy up the center of the ice on the PP...if I'm a penalty killer I know where the puck is going because he's not going to pass and he's not going to dump it in. Oh wait, I take that back he'll make one of those stupid drop passes. Sure it works every so often...
Is Roy a good player...yep, does he have any accountability for his mess ups? Nope, because there's somehow this mentality that we somehow can't win without him on the ice. That seems to be changing.
But overall I think asking Roy to be a 1st line center is asking too much. Look around the league at the really good top line centers. I just don't see Roy in that category. There's nothing wrong with this....as a 2nd line center...he'd be and was great.
