I'm rarely obsessed with draft picks, if I could I'd trade them all for RFAs already proven they can make the NHL, but my feeling is giving up a 1st and a 3rd for a guy who was a 5th round pick 7 years ago, has never put up over 55 points, and doesn't add much of a physical presence just doesn't sit well with me. They could have waited until the deadline and only given up 1 pick, and possibly have been able to clear a little more capspace that day. Now their backs are against the cap, should a better deal present its self, the Flyers are out of it, because they overpaid, and took on 3M in cap.
Example being:
Zherdev and a 1st would have cleared nearly enough money to land Brad Richards
Brad Richards is goign to get 7+ million on the UFA market this summer, so that example pretty much goes against the point you were trying to make. I also am not sure a players value goes down at the deadline, more likely it goes up, considerably. The deadline is when everybody trying like hell to get something done and bidding head to head with each other. The Flyers got a good, affordable, playoff tested winger and for all intents and purposes a 2nd and 3rd rounder.
They made another step towards winning the Cup, that's how it's done. They aren't rebuilding, the time is now.
