Captain is as much a responsibility off the ice as it is on the ice. Issues that go on out of town, organizing players and families, taking care of some personal matters, etc. requires a player that has respect from the team and the time to deal with it. I'm not sure Vanek, with two new babies, could really devot that time and effort. I don't think he's naturally a captain type anyway. Most scoring forwards don't get the C label because they just need to focus on making plays or scoring.
Character guys like Gaustad fit the mold better, but he doesn't see the ice as much as most captains do. Still, he's out there for big face-offs and to protect leads at the end. He fights and sticks up for everybody out there so I think he's a better choice. Pominville plays both PP and PK so he'd be a good choice also, or at least an A. It's good to have a big minute d-man with a letter also, and Leopold would be a good option for an A.
All that said, I don't know that having ONE person as the leader and/or voice of the team is really necessary. It's a team game no matter what, and everybody has to pull their weight.
Yea and that's what I mean. While I think Vanek should possibly get it on this team, there is a good chance that he wouldn't even come close on other teams.
Obviously we don't know, but from what we can tell Vanek doesn't seem to be very vocal. Atleast when I goto games and watch him on the bench he doesn't really talk much to anyone, not in the way goose or Pommers talk.
