slesh, if he came with a deal that wouldn't destroy any hope of the Buffalo Sabres I'd love to have had him, but it wasn't going to happen.
But tell me how many times these big name players that have been traded won the cup with the team that got them?
every team adds players at the deadline. at least every team that has won the cup since... i dont even know.
Big name players like Kovalchuk, not many teams add huge names and win a cup. Of course trades happen all the time for little pieces, but hardly ever does this pay off.
NJ got better a bit in scoring, but if they don't sign Kovie to an extension, it's worth nothing, they won't be a very decent team next year or for a few years. Do you really want to be set back another two-four years having to rebuild because you didn't win the Cup and lost the guy you traded for?
I'd much rather have this team be in the playoffs for more than one year and just add the little pieces together.
The Sabres team is built in a way where it works, we don't have HUGE name players, but people know Vanek, Connolly, Roy, and Pominville are players to fear when they are on their game. We need to add little pieces in the big picture, not mortgage our future for something that wouldn't even be a guarantee. The way the team is built works, don't deny it because look at the standings. We have two lines who can put the puck into the net and play sound defense, we have another two lines who can play great D and chip it into the net when needed. We also have those four players locked up for a few more years so they just keep getting better and building chemistry and when we add a few more pieces, after the years we have continually made the playoffs, that break might happen.
I don't want to make the playoffs this year, then be last in the NHL next year and maybe hardly break out of the bottom five the next year and after that also. I want this team to be a playoff team every year, because if you make the playoffs every year for 10 or more straight years, you may get that break, and may get it more than once. Detroit has been in 18 straight playoffs, won the cup three times, and many other teams who had streaks of consecutive playoff appearances won eventually also.
That is how I want a team built, playoffs every year, because it will happen eventually if you do it that way.

As I said in the GDT, the call on Rivet was horseshit. The Bruins player was holding onto Rivet's stick like it was the last fucking raft on the Titanic.
