They just got a lot better in scoring. Saying a little bit is like saying the Haitian earthquake was a minor tremor.
While you say we wouldn't make the playoffs next season if we would have landed Kovy, that would remain to be seen next season.
To use Detroits record as an indication of what the Sabres can do just doesn't hold water. The Sabres have not done 18 consecutive playoff appearances.
We'll see how this affects the Devils defensive system also.
And that is why I want the Sabres to make the playoffs for 18 straight years, because that is how you build a team, you build for every year to make the playoffs, and eventually you get that perfect mix of everything together to win it all.
I highly doubt we'd make the playoffs if we had given 4 guys away to land Kovy and lost him. If the Devils don't sign him, it was a bust of a move, if they sign him, then it could be good.
Sky, Pitt didn't make the playoffs between the early-mid 90's and last season from time and time and yet, they won the cup in both era's. What was there success story? Superstar players by the names of Mario and Sidney.
The Oilers had Gretzky in the 80's. Come to think of it, outside of the trap years with Jersey, just about every team that has won the Cup in the last 30 years or so has had a prolific scorer on their team. That speaks louder than what if scenario's.
Pittsburgh got four in a row top picks, that does wonders when you have a top three pick four years in a row. MAF, Crosby, Malkin, and Staal. It was only a matter of time when they got back into the playoffs and won something.
It's the same with Washington, you get top five picks it's only a matter of time before those players and your team gets really good.
Chicago is the same way, top ten picks for awhile, they start to pay off and you'll win games. Tampa Bay will be that way soon also, just need better goaltending.
The Sabres have never had a first overall pick, and hasn't had four straight top 3 picks like the teams that are ripping it up, We've always have had to build form middle of the draft picks or rounds. That is why we can't just trade away our players for one big name guy. If we already had a Superstar on our team to rely on, I'd say go for the big name guy. Get him to compliment your other guy, but the team has not been built like that.
I disagree with we must go and get every big name guy out there, this team is a solid team with problems, but what team has no problems? We have to rely on the draft to build, and subtle trades and FA signings for it to work, the team is not bad enough to get top picks for a few years, and it won't be for awhile, so we really need to develop our current prospects the right way. Because Adam, Ennis, Weber, Gerbe, Enroth are going to or hopefully be great players for us.
Ennis is already a good player, Kennedy also and they will just get better and so will the team. That is the only way this team can win, unless we just trade away Miller, Vanek, Roy, Connolly and Pominville and tank for top 5 picks for four straight years and do a complete rebuild of the team. But We have Roy, Vanek, Connolly, Pominville, Myers, Miller, Hecht, all signed for at least two or three more years, so the team is going to be very competitive in those years, we add a few pieces, a few of our drafted players who's saying how far they can go. It worked for Detroit, and has worked for other teams, it can work here.
Even the Islander Dynasty, Montreal, and Oilers Dynasty was because of great drafting and acquiring the little pieces to put them over the top.

As I said in the GDT, the call on Rivet was horseshit. The Bruins player was holding onto Rivet's stick like it was the last fucking raft on the Titanic.
