But seriously, does anyone think it might be better for the Sabres if the Senators win and we miss the playoffs?

Yeah, I would love to see the Sens win and we miss the playoffs. It may force Darcy's hand in bringing in that piece they need.... ;)

You can make fun of that concept all youw ant, but you won't see a cup as long as Darcy remains confident with the current roster.

Shortsighted = YEAH, A SINGLE WIN!!! Darcy's validated!
The BIG Picture = Darcy has MORE pressure to make a change.

This concept escapes many here, but it makes long-term sense.

Encouraging a culture of losing does not make sense under any circumstances. To think otherwise does a disservice to those that honor the game so.

ONCE AND FOR ALL...

I NEVER said anything about losing on purpoise...or tanking...or doing anything that would lead to a loss.

ALL I SAID 9now pay attention)...is that IF they had lost to the Sharks, the advantage would've been that it may have been the final straw for Darcy & Co. to chew on during the break, leading up to the trade deadline.

The simplisitc view is: NO! A win is a win. A win is THE most important thing at ALL times!

Okay. I'm just pointing out that there would've been an upside to a loss in that situation.

You either get it or you don't.

Enough already.

Neither did I. I'll reiterate. Creating a culture in which losing is acceptable will never help a team no matter what the circumstances, nor how it might supposedly help "long term."

The Boston Red Sox took 86 years to win a title because they couldn't get over the losing culture that permeated throughout the city. Ditto the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, etc. There is never an upside in losing. You can cite draft picks and so-called "wake up calls" as much as you want, but at the end of the day you never want your team thinking that the fans are satisfied with, or even encouraged by a loss. Never.

The fact that your statement is so widely ridiculed here should clue you in a little bit.

No, actually it doesn't surprise me at all that many don't understand my point. As I already said, fans are all about immediate satisfaction and generally aren't as concerned with the long term effects of an occurence---as long as they get what they want NOW!

This notion of a "culture of losing" that is somehow enhanced by what may be the tipping point for Darcy to act is completely irrelevant.

Just for shits and giggles, let me try this more explicitly:

IF that 7th loss actually DID cause Darcy to make several moves IMPORVING the team and getting that much closer to winning the cup, would you STILL be upset with the loss?

I think your point has been made

If both of you could use the reply option or snip posts and not continue to pyramid quote, it would be appreciated.

just as much as a win is shortsighted for the fans, its shortsighted for management as well. do you really think dacry is going to throw out the previous 59 games, and cite that one game as the basis for his moves come the deadline? win or lose, darcy knows the sabres holes, and win or lose, hes going to attempt to correct them. win or lose. nothing, not one thing, changed because of that win.

I disagree. I'm fairly confident that most everyone here gets your point.

It's just that nobody agrees with it. :)

We should trade away everyone and go for the number one pick in the draft and lose all of our games.

Get a guy who has never played goalie in his life and let him be goalie. Make the defense guys play forward and make the forwards play defense.

Sounds like something the Sabres would do.

I explicitly illustrated the point in this hypothetical:

"IF that 7th loss actually DID cause Darcy to make several moves IMPORVING the team and getting that much closer to winning the cup, would you STILL be upset with the loss?"

To disagree, even with this spelled out, is just plain foolish.

Yes, we don't know what Darcy is thinking, HOWEVER, the only point I was making is that a POSITIVE byproduct of a loss to the Sharks may have been that it would contribute to, if not be the catalyst for, NEEDED CHANGE.

No talk of TRYING to lose, no talk of "encouraging a culture of losing", no "tanking" on purpose.

It's funny how many will take a straightforward and logical supposition and either misread and misquote it, or flat out not understand the underlying point.

And BY THE WAY...

If losing a game lands you in a more preferable playoff spot based on pairings and how well you match up with different teams, you'd have to be a fool to not acknowledge that in some cases, YES, a loss is better.

Unless of course you are a blind homer who cannot see past tonight's victory beer bash and haven't any concept of overall startegy in controlling your destiny in the post season.

For the umpteenth time, I never said to TRY and lose, but sometimes a loss is not as bad as you're making it out to be if it somehow can contribute to the greater good.

If that's too heavy for you, sorry I mentioned it.

See this? That's totally uncalled for.

I, and many others, understand EXACTLY what your point is. You've repeated it ad nauseum. You can continue to weave your hypothetical scenarios, and I STILL won't agree with your premise.

You've made a couple snide comments about how your opinion is so advanced and difficult to comprehend for others. That shit can stop. Rule #1 around here, the Icehound rule : Thou shalt not be a douche.

You're being one. Take a few days off to think about it.

I have to disagree with preferable playoff matchups as well. The reason I don't put much stock into that is because most years in order to be the best, you have to beat the best.

No One Caresonlina situations almost never happen.
