The first video was just disturbing. That teacher should be reprimanded heavily at the least. That was a politically charged video, there's no place for that among public schools at that grade level.
There's a lot to reply to in this thread, but I'll start with what S2S said above.
I didn't realize when XC first posted this, that the first video had just come to light. I was on my way home from my grade school sons open house tonight & I flipped on the local Syndicated talk show. The same song those kids were singing was being played on the air.
First and foremost I concur with every word that S2S said. Now that I'm doing a bit of googling, I'm realizing the picture is even bigger. It appears that the parents of these Kindergartner's were not aware of what took place
Some of which can be read here.
I do not equate the viewing of the school rah-rah speech to High School Students, the same as Kindergartener's being taught to sing songs when they have no comprehension of the matter at hand. That to me, is brainwashing and propaganda - Hence my reference to Goebbles earlier on.
There is another issue with the video taping of and the release of said tape that is going to get whomever is responsible in a heap of trouble. I don't know if the laws in NJ differ from NY, but I have to sign papers every year whether or not I give permission to use any form of media (picture, video, etc) of my child for public release - print or otherwise.

did you actually even listen to that speech Schony? He covered such "controversial" topics as the importance of hard work, goal-setting, and education.
I'm going to try really hard to not sound like a hypocrite or say something typically dumb that I usually end up regretting.
I did not watch the speech nor would I let my grade school son watch it for the exact reasons you stated. I believe it is a parents job to instill upon their chlid(ren) the importance of hard-work, goal-setting, and education.
I'm trying to flip the coin per-se and understand and agree that the airing of Obama's speech was probably beneficial for a target audience. That being kids who do not receive this type of guidance from their parents.
I could have failed miserably at this task since (as some of you know) my middle son (18 and fresh out of H.S.) just joined the Army. Typically at a HS graduation, all the rah-rah stuff is geared towards those furthering their education or entering the workforce. I was SO honored as a parent that the number of seniors joining various ranks of the Military was so significant that it was mentioned
five times - all of which received a rounds of applause in their own right.
In ending, my disdain for that first video is due to:
1) The age of the kids - 4 and 5 ?!
2) Their parents being unaware of what took place
3) It crosses the line similar to separation of church and state.
4) The adoration of someone whose stance on what direction our Military takes waffles more than a 24 hour pancake restaurant.
5) I stand firm in my belief that we need to finish the job that was started and annihilate Al-Queda and terrorism. This coming from a Mom whose son will most likely be deployed in December speaks volumes.
My response to total strangers who say to me: "Oh my God, aren't you afraid your son will be killed?" is; "Yes, of course I am, and you should be thanking those that join the Military voluntarily so your child isn't drafted." That usually shuts them up on the spot.
I'll stop now, because I don't want to continue veering off the original topic of the video of the Kindergartener's. It's just a much bigger picture for me so I wanted to try to explain as best I could, why I feel the way I do.
I value all of your opinions and I do like hearing different viewpoints.
