He says the same stuff every year.

I'm willing to hold off raging on him until the deadline hits.

I'm pretty sure he just puts that message on a tape recorder every year. I really think he says "Nothing's close" every year. Especially considering the rumors I've heard of the Sabres being close to Whitney (along with Pittsburgh and LA).

"We’ve had conversations, but there’s nothing close," Regier said before the Sabres faced the Pittsburgh Penguins. "We’ll keep working on it tomorrow and see where it goes, but right now we don’t have anything close to what our objective is."

Well he doesn't want to make a trade to make one, he wants certain players or types of players, I think that last line makes perfect sense.

If I hear him say..."we are trying to build for the long-term instead of for the strech", or, "there are few sellers", I might just do something extremely drastic.
Obviously he is just making excuses. He wasn't building for the future when we got Moore, Bernier, or Zubrus...he was just trying to make it look like he's doing something.
FUCK!!!
He'll probally make anothher really gay pointless trade just to make it look like we did something, but nothing big. Then he'll claim how we were "trying to increase our depth at forward/defense." WTF!

No. He's the one who makes Eklunds "anomonous tips" so it seems like we are in on things. L.A in Pittsburgh are in? Then he makes a call and says we are in also so it seems like we are doing something.

If he doesn't do anything tomorrow, I won't be feeling feelings.

I think I'll just be numb.

It's really sad...

Sorry, but I really don't see the point in making a big trade right now, not unless it's a player under contract. I can about guarantee that the "objective" Darcy is talking about is getting a player they want that will still be under contract. If Florida is asking for more than MacArthur and a pick/prospect for Horton than it's probably not worth it. If teams are only shopping UFAs that won't resign in Buffalo this summer, there's no point in trading for them because this team is short by three significant players from a serious Cup run.

All Buffalo's UFAs this summer are expendable. That's 9.5 million to work with and 2-3 decent prospects that can make the team and actually be better than what we have right now (Ennis over Mac, Weber over Lydman/Montador). As Darcy said, there will be more UFAs available this summer, and the cap room to sign one or two. Why trade for them now when the team is too far away from a serious Cup run? Wait and sign them without giving up assets.

I get tired of the same routine too, but I can't see a lot to gain from at this deadline. This is the time when buyers usually pay too much. I'd rather Darcy be able to sell a UFA or two and be able to use those picks to acquire a bigger name under contract over the summer when the price is lower. I don't have enough faith in this current roster to think that being aggressive is the answer right now.

This is a great post....but as you said, we're sick of the same routine. We want new blood...more scoring...and a chance to get farther into the playoffs after 2 years without the playoffs. This is the least we've been scoring in quite a few years and it just happens to be the year when our defense and goaltending is absolutely sensational. (not so much defense). It just seems like a big waste that Miller is having this year and we barely allow any goals, but noone can score.

I've heard this story for 40 years now, all of the older fans have. The fans that were born from 86 on are now starting to numb themselves to this excuse as well.
The "WAIT TILL NEXT SEASON" line is pure and total bullshit. I have seen teams do things at the deadline that drove them into true cup contention over 40 years. I understand what you are saying, but the FA market isn't looking like a great field this year, http://www.nhlnumbers.com/freeagents.php. Some of these guys have already been resigned. I also agree that guys like Horton should be sought after. As for the payment for a "PROVEN" NHLer such as him, it will be high regardless the time of year. Kassian, Adams and other prospects are expendable in my opinioin when it comes to bringing in a RWer for Roy and Vanek, after all, it was Darcy's team that made the decision to keep this core, its their job to find the missing pieces, they have the time to digest whats wrong with this current core, they need to finish the job.

Just my 2 pennies.

I don't see a problem with trading Mac & Staff for Horton, if that's what they want so be it. If we're not going to keep them why not get rid of them now? We'd get rid of underachieving "potential" players for a good, tough(er) RWer for Vanek and Roy, then we can still have the cap room to go after a good player this off-season. But then again there's a reason I'm not the Sabres GM... (Not just because I'm underage ;) )

Exactly. Where did moves like Bernier/Zubrus/Moore/Heinze ever get this team anyway? The only rental player I can think of that actually made an impact is Gilmour.
