Assuming this is speculation, it would be exciting for a new majority owner to takeover if such a transaction takes place. If it does, I would not see any significant front office or hockey operations changes as existing personnel should be allowed to succeed or fail. If they fail, changes would occur some way.

Can a hockey owner own 100% if the team then, or is it like a corporation where not one owner can control the entire 100% and needs some sort of minority owner or can he buy up all shares of the team then?

An owner of a sports team can own 100% of the team

The latest quotes from Quinn I'm seeing are much more toward denying this story than deflecting:

From the AP

Quinn didn’t rule out majority owner Tom Golisano one day selling the team, but said the Sabres are not for sale or actively seeking a buyer.

“I wouldn’t sit by the telephone, no,” Quinn said. “And I’m not sure where this story is coming from.”

Larry Quinn's job is basically hiding anything until it's more official. The intent is 100% there, and I wouldn't see why BTG would come anywhere to refuse this offer.

Are Quinn and DiPofi being kept in the dark as Pegula and Golisano negotiate this personally?

You can be damn sure LQ and DiPofi are an afterthought.

Pegula and Golisano have probably already met and answered the key question.

Pegula: "Tom, you want to sell the team, how much?"
Golisano: "I'll sell it if the price is right, say 150 mil?"
Pegula: "I'll have my attorney contact your attorney."
Golisano: "Sounds good, Jalapeno Popper in the meantime?"
Pegula: "Why yes, thank you. Can you pass me the sun screen?"
Golisano: "Why sure, pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?"

I think this is why Quinn is behaving with such vehement denial...he doubtfully is even involved and may not have even known about it until today.

Also, at Slesh

Ya, Pagula isn't going to let LQ do anything past this season. It'll probably be a transitional routine until the trade deadline, but Pegula will most likely call the player personnel shots either through a temp. consultant or a direct hired gun. Maybe even a former sabre who has been vocal in the past like Robert.

It's natural for Quinn to be denying this...even if this is close to being a done deal, nothing is set in stone yet. It would be unprofessional of him to say anything otherwise.

I think Quinn only owns a single digit percentage of the team. It's used by BTG as a bonus system. If the team does well financially, they get a bonus.

And that is why Quinn doesn't let Darcy spend to the cap.

Some hockey journos on Twitter remarked that Bettman and the NHL like to do business after hours, which this would certainly be constituted as. This could be a done deal tonight if he's meeting with Bettman and they're on conf call with Goli.

He's involved in the CanalSide project to develop Buffalo's waterfront.
